HUGE thanks to everyone who came out last night.

For as much as we all focused on the “100 block nostalgia” part of We’re Just Happy To Be Here, believe it or not the main message of the album for me is to really enjoy the present and make today the “good old days” we’ll look back on in 5, 10 or 20 years. That’s how I feel about last night and I hope you do too.

Here’s to our ten years of 100 block hand stamps, and here’s to ten more.

What I Did Over 2012 Instead of Taking A Vacation

Exactly one year ago today I released UNDERDOGG.

It was my first rap album, a six song EP that took me three years to make. The making of it started off slow and unorganized but ended fast-paced and focused.

After I finished UNDERDOGG, I used the momentum I had built up to finish Apt’s debut album, DO YOURSELF IN, which he released 2/4/12.

By the time I finished producing both albums, I was ready to do more. By the time Apt’s release show came I had already written a new song that I performed at the show.

It was called “We’re Back”.

Before, it would take me months to write a song and make a beat, but I didn’t have time for that anymore. I made a goal to write a song a month, starting with “We’re Back” in February. Over the past year, I did just that.

The result is my newest album, WE’RE JUST HAPPY TO BE HERE.

It is a collection of ten songs that I wrote and recorded in 2012.

It is a love letter to 100 block.

It samples a Provo band on every single song.

It features some of my favorite Provo musicians.

It attempts to celebrate the ten year anniversary of me hanging out on 100 block without being overly nostalgic or glorifying the past more than the present.

On one hand, this album only took me a year to complete, making it the most music I’ve created in such a short amount of time.

On the other hand, this album was ten years in the making, chronicling a decade in the life of a half-assed musician and local scene fly-on-the-wall in Provo.

Either way, I put a lot of work into this album and so I hope you all will take the time to check it out.

The release party is Wednesday, 12.12.12 at Muse Music Cafe.

Dreams Come True At Rooftop Concerts

Last summer I went to the Rooftop Concerts in Downtown Provo and thought “I would love to play at something like this”. It wasn’t even a realistic goal to me at that point. It was just something you say, like “I wanna have a million dollars” or “I wanna be an astronaut”.

You have to remember that most family-friendly Provo indie rock bands don’t even get to play these huge summer concerts, and I am a Provo rapper. Not only am I a Provo rapper, but I’m not even like a super-chill party-friendly rapper that sweet bros can get down to. I make fun of that stuff. I’m the guy who did a parody of fellow 2012 Rooftop opener John Allred’s Kickstarter Video. I have multiple strikes against me and shouldn’t expect too much in Provo.

Except I never believed that last sentence. I can’t stand it when people write Provo’s music scene off to justify why they’re not doing great things. If you want Provo to have a polka scene, start a polka band. If you can’t get any shows, make your own. So with that attitude, I started to think “No seriously, I wanna play a rooftop show someday”.

When this summer’s Rooftop Concert Series got announced, I set an actual goal that me & Apt would work our asses off and get on the 2013 lineup. Then a couple months ago, I got to do a parody rap song with Rooftop co-founder C. Jane Kendrick. I recorded my verse at my house, then after the song was done I met her for the first time after last month’s Rooftop Concert with The Moth & The Flame. Even then, I thought to myself that maybe if I asked nicely I could get on the 2013 Rooftop Series, since the 2012 lineup was already announced. I gave her a copy of Underdogg and already started thinking of Twitter hashtags for our 2013 Rooftop campaign.

Then, like 2 weeks ago, I got an email from Rooftop’s other co-founder, Sarah Wiley, asking if me and Apt would play THIS MONTH’S Rooftop, the Tom Petty Tribute Show!

I was so blown away. Apparently there wasn’t going to be an opener for the show, but since we have a simple setup (no drums or amps) they thought we’d be a good fit. In the back of our minds me and Adam pictured ourselves playing to a bunch of grandparents on blankets shaking their heads at us in disapproval. Lucky for us, we always set our expectations low and we’re never disappointed.

Last night we had a great time playing at the Rooftop. Our songs translated better than I expected to the huge crowd, and the whole night reminded me why I love living in Provo. And we were a better fit on the show than a lot of people probably thought when they first heard we were opening. We even had our own all-star cast of guest Provo singers join us on stage, including Scott Shepard, John-Ross Boyce, Cody Rigby, Emily Brown, and Jack Mergist.

Hopefully events like this show people that me and Apt aren’t really that much different from the other bands they see in Provo; we just happen to rap. Once people can see us in that context, and not in the context of what they’re taught a rapper should look or sound like, I think they’ll get where we’re coming from a lot better.

I love when people assume that because I don’t swear a ton in my songs, then I must have a problem with people that do, or I’m like pushing some kind of moral agenda. Not only does our record (shows we book, artists we listen to etc) disprove that assumption, but by making it, you just became the most judgmental person in the room, which is saying a lot when you’re in a room full of Mormons.

Nate Baldwin – guitar, bass drum and vocals. Nate has been around the Utah music scene for a good while. Previously made famous with Nate Baldwin and the Sound, he is excited to finally blend voices with family. Nate has a wide music background from recording an album at Nashville’s sound Emporium to singing in a 22 person choir directed by Mack Wilberg in Chicago. An accomplished guitarist and featured on TV and the radio, he is ready to lend a guiding hand to take the Utah music scene by storm with Baldwin Games.
